How to build trust in the age of AI — and our mission to protect it

AI is now part of an increasing number of interactions between people and businesses. It powers search, recommends products and increasingly acts as the intermediary between consumers and the choices they make.

But as Chief Trust Officer, I focus on a quieter, more fundamental question: how do we protect trust when more and more decisions are being shaped by machines?

As AI systems begin making comparisons and recommendations that people once made for themselves, the quality of the information feeding those systems becomes increasingly important. If AI is to help people make better decisions, it must be grounded in authentic, transparent and representative human experiences.

Building a trustworthy digital ecosystem isn't passive. It requires the integrity of the information that powers it. At Trustpilot, our mission is to become the universal symbol of trust by protecting the genuine human experiences that increasingly underpin the digital economy.

The shift in consumer trust

For years, customer reviews were primarily a validation tool—a final confidence check before making a purchase.

Today, AI is moving that moment much earlier. Large Language Models (LLMs), predictive search and AI-powered shopping assistants are constantly assessing businesses before consumers even begin comparing options. Rather than relying on marketing claims alone, these systems increasingly look for independent signals that indicate whether a business is credible and trustworthy.

That changes the role of reviews. Honest customer experiences are no longer simply helping people make decisions; they are also becoming part of the evidence AI uses to make decisions on people's behalf.

Without authentic reviews, AI has less reliable evidence on which to base its recommendations. And if that evidence is incomplete, manipulated or unrepresentative, the consequences extend far beyond a single purchasing decision. It affects which businesses are surfaced, which consumers place their trust in, and ultimately the quality and fairness of the marketplace itself.

Why integrity is infrastructure

This is why trust has become infrastructure, not simply a feature.

Our recent announcement that Trustpilot has become a Key Product Partner with Shopify is an important milestone for exactly this reason.

By embedding independent customer feedback into one of the world's largest commerce ecosystems, we're helping ensure that trust remains visible wherever decisions are made—whether by people or by AI systems acting on their behalf.

The future of digital discovery must be grounded in reality. That means continuing to invest in verified feedback, open platform principles and the integrity of genuine customer experiences.

As AI reshapes how people discover businesses and make decisions, trust becomes something that must be actively maintained, not assumed. Our role isn't simply to collect reviews; it's to protect the integrity of one of the signals that increasingly underpins the economy. That's what it means to build the universal symbol of trust in the age of AI.
